Circles

12 February 2024

Yesterday I had the absolute privilege of sitting in two circles with fellow writers. One circle promotes reflection on our Whiteness and the impact of our words in the wider community. The second one offers mutual support for our writing projects. In both, we show up with our rough drafts, we take turns, we listen, and, as appropriate, we respond. These aren’t new methods or new groups, but something struck me yesterday. The longer I sit inside these circles, the more I feel like the “I” “me” writer has the potential to expand into the “we.” When this happens, we don’t lose our individual experiences or words, or responsibility. Instead, we get wrapped inside a bigger shawl, a bigger circle. Inside, there’s more space for the heart to flow.
